Beyond Burnout and Balance
Finding a Dress That Makes You Look and Feel Like the Best Version of You:
Last year, I wrote about Building a Bridge from Burnout to Balance. What I didn’t share then was what came next – and how the choices I made after burnout quietly reshaped my business into something far more resilient than I expected.
The first and nonnegotiable step seemed simple – but proved harder than I expected: health first – always. For a year or two, every business decision ran through one question: Will this support or undermine my health?
That didn’t mean stopping work. It meant getting intentional. I stopped doing “a bit of everything”, because being spread too thin had become part of the problem.
Which led to the deeply uncomfortable lesson of letting go.
I started practising what I preached, bringing in specialists and handing tasks over – sometimes to upskill me, sometimes to support clients directly. I won’t pretend it was easy. We all have preferred systems and tools, and handing work to someone who doesn’t necessarily share those preferences can feel wildly uncomfortable (and yes, I backtracked – more than once!).
For a while, backtracking felt easier than delegation. The turning point? Realising that delaying handovers kept everything siloed through me – even when I was exhausted. And as the saying goes: If nothing changes, nothing changes.
At the same time, I got clearer about the work – and the people. I stopped saying yes to everything and made a deliberate decision to work with clients who were more valuesaligned. Shortterm projects became a testing ground. I learned (again) that I’m not for everyone – and that’s okay.
Unexpected benefits followed:
- I started loving my work again.
- Networking felt more natural, not forced.
- I became significantly more focused and efficient.
- My income increased while my expenses decreased.
Then came systems, processes… and the big one – paying properly.
Like many small business owners (particularly women), I’d been part of the “Can I pick your brain over a coffee?” culture. Lovely – but cups of coffee don’t pay suppliers. So, my clientsupplier colleagues and I made a decision: to consistently pay each other for our work.
The impact was profound. Paying properly
- built confidence,
- improved quality, and
- created sustainability.
It removed ambiguity and resentment – and stabilised our businesses.
That mindset naturally grew into something bigger.
Shared values, trust, and experience turned into Sage Room Coop, with shared leadership and shared responsibility. What began as a practical solution to lease offices together became a powerful realisation: when workload, decisions and risk are shared, resilience increases.
We now continue to build this intentionally through regular Strategic Reset Business Retreats – pausing to reflect, reset systems, strengthen relationships, and ask for help. Because resilience isn’t built in emergencies. It’s built before things break or burnout hits.
Six years on from burnout, I’m still weathering waves – but now I know how to ask for help, and where to find it.
