Forgetting the So-Called “Rules”
Finding a Dress That Makes You Look and Feel Like the Best Version of You:
By Belle Challis, Belles & Brides
When it comes to wedding attire, older brides and mothers of the bride or groom are often burdened by outdated fashion “rules.” The truth is, most of them no longer apply.
One of the biggest misconceptions isn’t about style or colour at all. It’s the belief that you don’t need a fitting appointment. That you’ll simply shop online or browse department stores because a private appointment feels too indulgent or unnecessary.
In reality, a fitting appointment can make all the difference. Shopping for a wedding or formal gown is about more than finding a dress. It’s about having the time, space and guidance to discover what truly suits you. Online images can’t show you how fabric moves, how structure supports your shape, or how a gown will make you feel when you put it on.
A private appointment allows you to explore options you may never have considered and receive personalised advice from someone focused entirely on helping you look and feel your best. At its best, it feels like shopping with a knowledgeable friend who genuinely wants you to shine.
There Are No Rules You Have to Follow
One of the most common concerns women bring into appointments is dressing “age appropriately.” In reality, age has very little to do with what looks beautiful on you.
What matters far more is fit, proportion, fabric and how a dress complements your unique shape. If you light up when you see yourself in the mirror, that’s usually the best indication you’ve found something special.
This Might Not Be Your First Wedding, But It Is Your Wedding
Women marrying later in life, or for a second time, often feel pressure to tone things down. Wear colour instead of white. Skip the traditional gown. Keep it understated.
But this is still your wedding day, and it deserves to be celebrated. A confident woman wearing a white or ivory gown is every bit as beautiful, regardless of whether she’s been married before. Don’t feel obligated to minimise the occasion. Wear the dress that makes you feel like a bride.
On Covering Up
Many women arrive determined to cover their arms, and that’s completely understandable. Before ruling out a style you love, however, consider giving yourself permission to try something different.
Something as simple as a professional spray tan can create a more even skin tone and provide a confidence boost that allows you to explore styles you may have dismissed too quickly.
Flowy Isn’t Always the Answer
Loose, flowing gowns are often considered the safest option, particularly around the tummy area. While that can certainly be true, it’s not always the most flattering choice.
Depending on your shape, a fitted gown with strategic ruching may create a far more flattering silhouette. This is why it’s so important to keep an open mind during your appointment. The dress that surprises you is often the one you fall in love with.
For the Mother of the Bride or Groom
Mothers of the bride and groom deserve just as much attention when choosing their outfit. You want to feel confident in photos, complement the bridal party and remain comfortable enough to enjoy every moment of the celebration.
A conversation with the bride about colours and overall style is a great starting point. From there, focus on finding something that fits beautifully, feels special and allows you to enjoy the day with confidence.
Where to Begin
If you’re not sure where to start, that’s perfectly okay. Around 12 months before the wedding, begin looking for a boutique that takes the time to understand your vision, budget and concerns.
A good stylist won’t pressure you into a particular style. They’ll listen, offer thoughtful guidance and help you discover a gown that genuinely feels like you.
Most importantly, enjoy the experience. Whether you’re the bride or the mother of the bride or groom, finding your outfit is one of the most memorable parts of the journey, and it’s a moment worth savouring.
