ROBYN’S STORY –

I started my career working for one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest Local Government organisations – the Brisbane City Council!  For over 20 years I worked in there in multi-disciplinary Marketing and Communication areas specialising in stakeholder and community engagement.  I even worked in Brisbane’s beautiful Brisbane City Hall building and for the Deputy Mayor where meeting dignitaries from all over the world was an everyday occurrence.

As you do in government one of the many side assignments was to assess tenders and grants.  I was on the first committee to instigate grants for the area in Council that allocates leasing for community organisations.  It was there I realised how passionate I was to see these organisations thrive and grow and how much better our community was for it.  Strategic Planning and growth through funding empowerment became my thing!  Following working in the Council full time I ventured into working as a corporate consultant.  Whilst this work was financially rewarding I felt I wasn’t inspired to just work for the dollars, I needed more.  In doing what I did for large organisations that I discovered that there was no one sharing their expertise and knowledge in these areas with smaller organisations and in particular small business.  As a small business owner and investor I thought what I knew was common knowledge!  My founding of Busy Connecting was built on the idea that SME’s were missing out on so much and needed someone who looked at them individually and didn’t apply an expensive “one size fits all” strategy.  Small business owners didn’t believe me at first that there was billions of dollars in grants that they could access without drawing down on home loans etc for their businesses.

I have over 40 years’ experience in governance and compliance working on large strategic communication projects in both the corporate sector, government and community within Australia and internationally.  My skills include writing legislative and government documentation, tenders, grants, government and corporate submissions, stratetigic communication documentation.  My passion now is for delivering these services to much smaller organisations and assisting small businesses including start-ups to grow and reach their full potential at an affordable price.

The name Busy Connecting came from a brainstorm with some trusted colleagues who said I was always busy connecting businesses collaboratively for funding success and growth.  So Busy Connecting it was but I really wanted to call my business The Boring Writer which was my forte and I’m told my genius.  Apparently, a negative is not a good business name but hey it’s my hashtag!

I love looking at businesses with fresh eyes to give them an idea of how they can better reach more ideal clients and what they are missing out on.  Backing this onto cost effectively covering everything from growing their business through funding and procurement, website content, social media marketing, tips and tricks for business, strategic specialist writing to even helping them to achieve greater success from an expo – I have someone on my large collaborative team to cover it all, and if we don’t do it I’ll know someone who does – I’m always Busy Connecting but I do laugh when called a Super Connector!

I’m driven to continue my personal mission to advocate for women and raise their voices to reach full gender equality and I’m a well-known advocate for funding for women.

I’ve served on many Committees and Boards and held executive positions on School, Community, and Sporting Boards.  I’m been a passionate volunteer for over 4 decades with many organisations supporting domestic violence victims, homelessness, and the environment.  I’m proudly the only Gold Award Winner for Outstanding Community Support, Ausmumpreneur Awards.

I’m a Mentor for the Australian Women’s Business School; Advisor on the Business Planning Course Panel – UniSC since inception and Mentor for International Day of the Girl Child.  I was recognised as a Civic Leader Innovate 2018-2020.  I am a Judge for many Awards including the yearly Ausmumpreneur Awards too.

In the last year, I’ve also added Board Member for Women Changing the World Investments and Board Member for the ABLE International Publishing House and Author Awards and Expos.

I’ve been an investor and in particular a small business investor since 1982.

I love the reaction when I assist someone navigating the hard stuff of boring writing.  I like to think I’m leaving a legacy behind and making the world a better place through mentoring and growing communities by assisting to fund community organisations and small businesses.

I’m a passionate advocate for Ladies Who Long Lunch and the 2 beautiful women who run this.  Giving ourselves permission to take some time out and reward ourselves with a long lunch without feeling guilty is a wonderful gift to our mental health and wellbeing.  This will be their legacy.

What’s your legacy?
